ISIS confirms death of former leader, announces new leader

The Islamic State (ISIS) announced on Thursday, March 10, a successor to slain leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi, confirming the death of the militant group’s leader for the first time, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Abu Omar al-Muhajer, the spokesman of ISIS, said in an audio message broadcast on Thursday that the new leader of the group is Abu al-Hassan al-Hashemi al-Quraishi.
Quraishi’s real name was not given in the group’s statement and he is not believed to be related to the prior leader, Abu Ibrahim. ISIS claims its leaders are descended from the Quraish tribe, which the Prophet Muhammad belonged to.
Abu Ibrahim blew himself up along with members of his family during a raid by US special operations forces in February at his hideout in a house in Atmeh, Syria, near the border with Turkey.
The former spokesman of ISIS, Abu Hamza al-Quraishi, also died in the raid by special forces in February.
