Fuad Hussein visits Berlin, meets German counterpart

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas met with his visiting Iraqi Kurdish counterpart Fuad Hussein in Berlin on Monday, September 14, to discuss bilateral relations and the on-going campaign against Islamic State (ISIS) militants.

According to a readout published by Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the pair discussed Baghdad’s “efforts to preserve Iraq’s sovereignty, achieve political stability, and economic development,” along with the outcomes of the US-Iraq Strategic Dialogue.
According to NRT Hussein said that the relationship between Iraq and Germany was “important” and thanked Germany for its efforts in helping to confront the threat posed by ISIS.
He also “affirmed the Iraqi government’s commitment to holding [early parliamentary] elections on time, in accordance with standards of integrity, transparency and international [observance],” the readout said.
Maas said that Germany stood by Iraq in confronting its many challenges and said that Berlin has provided €2 billion ($2.38 billion) as a part of that effort.
Maas also expressed appreciation for the effort of the Iraqi security forces in securing the release of Hella Mewis, a German arts advocate who was abducted in Baghdad in July.
