Sadr coalition calls for Abadi resignation

The Sairoon List, led by Moqtada al-Sadr, has called for the resignation of outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and his cabinet.

The Council of Representatives convened an emergency meeting on Saturday, September 8, to address the situation in Basra.
The Sairoon List called for the formation of a strong government during the session.
“We demand the Prime Minister and the ministerial cabinet submit their resignations and apologize to the people,” the Sairoon bloc added.
Hadi al-Amiri's Fateh Alliance has also called on Abadi to resign and signaled that it was working with Sairoon to form a government, according to AFP.
At least thirteen people have been killed and 161 others wounded during the protests, which reignited last weekend.
Additionally, political party and government offices were attacked and the Iranian consulate was burned.
Protesters demanded reliable electricity, potable water, jobs, and an end to corruption.
