Turkey sentences Osman Baydemir to one year
HDP deputy Osman Baydemir was sentenced to one year, five months and 15 days over alleges of insulting the police while he was the governor of Diyarbakir, NRT reported.
Baydemir was released on January 7 one day after his detention in Izmir over charges of allegedly organizing “illegal” meetings and gatherings.
The HDP’s inclusion in Turkey’s Parliament came in 2015 after it gained 80 seats in the Parliament making itself the second largest opposition block after the Justice and Development (AKP) party of the current administration.
Selahattin Demirtas, former HDP co-leader, was detained in a police raid on November 4, last year and has been in jail since then, pending trial. He recently announced he intends to quit the party.
