US does not understand Turkish position on Kurds: center

Wilson Center has stated in an Analysis that the U.S. approach toward Kurds in Turkey has not been able to change Ankara's position on the Kurds in Syria and Turkey. Therefore, it is better for Washington to adopt a different stance on the Kurds, especially Syria's Kurds.

The Wilson Centre has accused the U.S. of softening Turkey's position on Syrian Kurds in return to permitting Ankara to suppress the pro-Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and has not taken any position in Turkey's suppressing, arresting and jailing Kurdish parliament deputies and mayors and has even helped Turkey crack down on the mayors in the Kurdish regions of the country.
The Wilson Center wrote that the U.S. was looking forward to Turkey softening its positions on Syrian Kurds and the self-ruling system in northern Syria, unaware that Turkey considers the HDP, PKK and the Syrian Kurds as a united entity which threaten its own security. This is why the U.S. administration's approach to the issue could not hinder Turkey from attacking Syrian Kurds. This issue led to the new attacks by the Turkish military on Syrian Kurds, which resulted in Ankara's success in expelling Kurdish forces from important parts of northern Syria.
Nicholas Danforth, a researcher on Middle East issues at the Marshall Institute of Germany and analyst, believes that the new U.S. effort to bring the Kurdish movements closer together is to assure Ankara that the Kurdish authority is not a threat against Turkey.
However, the author emphasizes that Turkey's problem is the control of the Syrian Kurdish forces, known as YPG, on the Kurdish region in the north of the war-torn Syria.
The Wilson Center article has reminded the U.S. that Washington's policy toward the Kurdish-Turkish issue, either under US President Barack Obama or during President Donald Trump's presidency, has not had a positive result for the Kurds or for the U.S.
The center has advised Washington to adopt a new approach which, the article says, is to protect the Kurdish autonomous entity in northern Syria and help Syrian Kurds to maintain their autonomy while keeping ties with the central government in Damascus.
