UN envoy to Iraq visits Kirkuk

Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General (SRSG) for Iraq, Jan Kubis, visited Kirkuk on Monday, May 7. The visit was the first of its kind since October when Iraqi forces took the city from Kurdish forces of Peshmerga.

Kubis held talks with acting Kirkuk governor Rakan Saeed al-Jabouri during his visit to the city, discussing security, political, and economic issues, as well as services, displaced people and campaigning for the May 12 parliamentary election, NRT reported.

“Kirkuk is an Iraqi city and co-existence should be established in the city,” the acting governor of Kirkuk said.

Jabouri called on the UN envoy to work to reconstruct the villages destroyed during the military operations, by he said, “some Peshmerga commanders.”

The acting government also called for pressure on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to determine the destiny of thousands of detainees who have been arrested by Asayish (security) forces.

He also asked the UN envoy to form a committee to investigate 116 villages that have been destroyed.

“I call upon you to work to return nearly $55 million of Kirkuk's which is in the Kurdistan International Bank in Erbil, causing the halt of the most of the projects and services in the city,” Jabouri said.
