UN urges Syrian Kurds and US to open corridors for civilians
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) on Friday called on Kurdish-Syrian forces and the US, which leads the anti-IS coalition in eastern Syria, to open safe passages for tens of thousands of civilians, mainly women and children, who are trapped in eastern Syria in desperate humanitarian conditions.
On Thursday the World Health Organization (WHO) released a statement of concern over the deaths of 29 children from cold in the past two months at the Al Hol refugee camp at the border with Iraq.
There are 33,000 civilians at the camp, who have been living for years in tents and sleeping outside, ANSA reported.
Poor weather has made living conditions worse for tens of thousands of civilians who are trapped and isolated as a result of ongoing conflict.
"It is very important to ensure a safe passage for civilians," said UNHCR spokesperson Andrej Mahecic, cited by pan-Arab media.
