CHP will present its own presidential candidate: Deputy leader

Turkey Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Deputy Group Chair Ozgur Ozel has refuted rumors suggesting that the IYI (Good) Party and the CHP will present Meral Aksener as a joint presidential candidate, saying the CHP will present its own candidate in the June 24 snap election.

“The CHP’s candidate will be determined at the party assembly tomorrow [April 24],” Ozel said on April 23 in an interview with Haberturk TV.

According to Hurriyet daily he added that the resignation of 15 CHP lawmakers to transfer to the IYI Party in order to facilitate the latter’s participation in the election “only aimed to ensure the IYI Party’s participation in the election.”

“If Aksener is to be a candidate, we only tackled the obstacles to her candidacy,” Ozel said.

The CHP lawmakers resigned from their party on April 22 and joined the IYI Party in a bid to secure the latter’s participation in the election and its ability to present a presidential candidate without legal constraints.

The CHP will convene its party assembly on April 24, during which its candidate and alliance principles will be determined.
