The people of the Kurdistan Region will go to the polls on Sep. 25 for what has been labeled a ‘historic day’, to decide on whether to remain a part of Iraq or secede and become a newly-formed independent state.
According to Kurdistan 24 the Independent High Election and Referendum Commission (IHERC) previously announced the campaign would kick off on Sep. 5 and will run until Sep. 22.
Late Monday night, people gathered near the Erbil Citadel and expressed their support for the upcoming referendum.
Despite concerns from Baghdad, neighboring countries and the US regarding the timing of the event, senior Kurdish officials have insisted on holding the referendum as planned, stating Baghdad and the international community offer no guarantees for the rights of the Kurdistan Region’s people should they delay the event.
