It seems unlikely for Barzani to step back from independence decision: Zalmay Khalilzad
The former U.S. ambassador to Iraq has stated that it seems very unlikely for Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani to step back from its decision to hold the scheduled referendum of the region set for September 25.

Zalmay Khalilzad told a press conference that holding a referendum does not mean the region is declaring its independence, adding that it is within the interest of Kurdistan parties to make an accord among Erbil, Baghdad and the U.S. he reiterated that it is very unlikely for Barzani to call of the referendum.

He further went on to say that it is very unlikely for Syrian Kurds to achieve independence in 15 to 20 years to come as the Kurdish regions of the country are not connected.
