Kurds have no choice but to pursue independence: Barzani
Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani issued on Tuesday, August 15, a statement commemorating the 71st anniversary of the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) establishment and stressed that Kurds have not other choice but to pursue independence.

Urging the people of the Kurdistan Region to be supportive of a move towards independence, Barzani said in a statement which was released by official KDP media that “The people of the Kurdistan have no choice ahead but to pursue the independence. This is in an effort to prevent repetition of tragedy and bring about peace and relief.”

According to NRT a Kurdish delegation from the High Referendum Board met with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi after the delegation arrived in Baghdad on Monday, August 14.

A member of the delegation, Saadi Ahmed Pira, said the delegation told Abadi Kurds believe the referendum on independence must be held.

The Kurdistan Region declared on June 7 a plan to hold the referendum on the region’s independence this year on September 25.
