KRG website released a statement on Sunday, July 16, saying the region’s Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received Iranian Ambassador to Iraq, Iraj Masjedi.
Masjedi restated his country’s support for the friendship between the Kurdistan Region and Iran during the meeting, the statement said, adding that said Tehran is trying in every way to help the Kurdistan Region and Iraq resolve the issues between both sides through dialogue.
“As how the Islamic Republic of Iran assisted the Kurdistan Region at difficult times, [Iran] will now try in every way to resolve the issues between Erbil and Baghdad” he added, cited by the KRG’s website.
Barzani said in the meeting that the solution of the issues between the region and Baghdad needs serious dialogue and that Iran could play a positive to help both sides.
Iranian ambassador also met with the officials from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) on Sunday and they discussed referendum and the suspended issues between Baghdad and the region, NRT reported.
Masjedi is expected to meet with Masoud Barzani on Monday to discuss referendum.
The autonomous northern Kurdistan Region is expected to hold a referendum on September 25 with the aim to establish an independent state.
